Jan 9, 2011 – Sietske in Beiroet Blogspot -

When skiing, you’re bound to end up in the chair lift with strangers; in my case, Lebanese men (in general). Boy, you dudes are negative about your own country! Maybe it’s just an attitude, a habit to talk yourself down so the foreigners don’t get the chance to criticize you, but I’m telling you, not much positive stuff I heard while in that chair lift all the way up to Nord, Mzaar (ex- Faraya – Mzaar) , at 2336 meters.

And so I’ll give you the positive stuff;
Price of a ski ticket: 35,000 LBP (about 22 dollars) for half a day.
Price of ski rentals: 10,000 LBP ($ 7.50) if you’re not picky, 25,000 LBP ($17) for new gear.
Number of slopes: 42 (with a little imagination)
Kilometers of ski tracks: 80 kilometers
Distance to the slope (from Beirut): 55 km.
Weather: Gorgeous & sunny

Meanwhile hubbie, who hates skiing, went diving. Name me a country where this is possible. So please, be a little positive now and then, especially to foreigners, because I tell you, this is pretty special. [...]

Take it from the pros folks, skiing in Lebanon is an unmatched adrenaline packed experience

September 2010 – My Destination Info – Travel – Middle East – by Pascal Gouel

Lebanon’s ski season really starts in January and may go all the way through to April. There are a total of 6 ski resorts located across the mountainous backbone of Lebanon’s geography.

Cedars: Located 130km from the airport North of Beirut at a top altitude of 3,086m. The full service resort has 5 ski lifts, over 15 different types of accommodation including the 4* Cedrus Hotel, 12 different pubs / restaurants and 8 nightclubs. The slopes have different levels of difficulty ranging from areas specifically designed for kids to those for the experienced professional skiers.
Tip: Cedars is by far the coldest of the resorts in Lebanon so make sure you pack lots of warm clothing

Mzaar: Mzaar ski resort is the most popular resort with the Lebanese people as well as tourists. It is located only 46 km from Beirut airport. The resort reaches a top altitude of 2,450m and has the highest number of lifts in any resort in Lebanon – currently at 18 lifts. This resort has 42 slopes and almost 80km of ski tracks. There are nearly 30 different pubs / restaurants and 8 different nightclubs – as a matter of fact a lot of residents from Beirut go to Mzaar just for the nightlife. There are 13 different hotels and chalets offering a wide range of accommodation budgets and types.
Tip: To enjoy a full ski resort experience stay at the beautifully designed and centrally located hotel the Intercontinental Mzaar Hotel.

Faqra: This ski resort is located just beneath Mzaar and is 43km from Beirut Airport. Its highest altitude is 1,980m. The resort has 4 ski lifts and only two different accommodation venues – the L’Auberge de Faqra and a complex of different sized chalets. This resort is quite small and is designed for an exclusive getaway for families wanting to avoid the rush all the other resorts experience. There is one nightclub nearby and about 8 different restaurants in the area.
Tip: Whilst Faqra is a good resort, it’s worth the extra 3 km drive and spending your time in Mzaar which is much more exciting, has better services and a lot more to do.

Laqlouq: The ski resort in Laqlouq is another popular venue. This resort is located about 62km from Beirut Airport and has a top altitude of 1,920m. There are 9 ski lifts in the resort ranging in length from 130m all the way to 1,017m. There are 4 hotels located in and around Laqlouq ski resort and a further 8 restaurants / pubs. There are no nightclubs in the area and this resort is a highly popular destination for young families.

Zaarour: This is a private ski resort located on Sannine Mountain and about 54km from Beirut Airport. Its maximum altitude is 2,000m and currently has 7 ski lifts in use. Zaarour has one hotel (60 rooms) and 4 different restaurants.
Tip: It’s worth taking a day trip to this resort as it is immensly beautiful.

Qanat Bakish: This ski resort is a small facility located 47km from Beirut Airport and about 1.5 hour drive. The resort has 3 operational lifts and one hotel and a top altitude of 2,050m. With one hotel and two restaurants, not much can be said about this place other than it is very cosy!
